The focus on this assignment is usually to outline the assessment procedure within breastfeeding and show their practical employ and importance. The nursing method was introduced in the United Kingdom by Yura and Walsh in 1967 (White, 2005, p128). This was an effort to direct traditional breastfeeding away from intuitional and practice practice. The objective of developing this process was to produce a method for applying a medical problem-solving method to nursing practice (Haberman, 2005). Alfaro-LeFevre, (2006, p4) summarises this process in a systematic 6 staged series. He describes them as follows: - Examine, diagnose, determine, plan, put into action and examine. Every phase within this procedure outlined previously mentioned have an individual role but they are all interdependent with one another (Royal College of Nursing (RCN), 2009, section three). Barrett, Wilson and Woodlands, (2009) expand this procedure further, adding that this is a cyclical, on-going process which will continues throughout the nursing process.

Benner (1984, pp42-43) expands on the nursing procedure stating that many different models of nursing have already been established to reinforce this step-by-step, elemental staged approach giving structure to the care delivery whilst getting together with a individuals individual needs. The different different models represent a varied range of principles and philosophy that guide the nurse throughout the problem-solving procedure. Roper Logan and Tierney (1980) argue that the medical process itself is vacuous, unless utilized within the framework of a conceptual framework or nursing style.

Assessment is usually both the primary stage from the nursing process and a relentless element in some other step of the process (Atkinson & Murray, 2000, pp25). In their typical work, Roper, Logan and Tierney (2000, pp. 124) consolidate this point, noting the word evaluation has been used as it of the 1st phase of the nursing method. They simplify that this does not always mean it is a once only activity, but it comes with: gathering data from or perhaps about your customer, reviewing that collected details, then spotting the person's concerns and putting first from amongst problems, whilst following the breastfeeding process. This ascertains the care/treatment and services a person requires over the nursing process.

Additionally , the term ‘assessment' in its broad sense can be defined as ‘an activity consisting of gathering data, interpreting the significance of the data and deciding on whether there may be need for further more action, ' (Campbell and Glasper, 1995, p. 127). Linking this definition to the nursing method, it can be interpreted as the manner in which the health professional collects and evaluates info about their client (family, community or individual). Mason and Webb (1997) highlight the nursing medical diagnosis and the medical assessment are extremely closely related, being that the diagnosis a clinical judgement, which is built as a result of the assessment method.
