Although reading The Burning of Rome, anyone with basic observation skill may understand Tacitus' purpose. The readers should take what he says against Nero, and try to consider everything he says so they will turn against Nero. Tacitus believes readers should feel that Nero began the fire that engulfed Tome. He would like reader to think about Nero as being a corrupt, sneaky human being, and overall the worst, the majority of evil head that ever before ruled over Rome. Tacitus uses the rhetorical strategies of pathos, information, and liaison as methods to help him persuade viewers to believe his point.

Tacitus places pathos to good work with on a volume of statements and explanations. To show readers against Nero, Tacitus evokes the emotions of hatred, shame, and compassion when he says " The shrieks of panic troubled women, the weakness in the ages…” (Tacitus 327). Composing that and additional sentences, the author targets the audience's feeling of pity. He would like them to think piteous toward the women and old men; simply by feeling because of this, they think hatred against Nero and somewhat convert against him; therefore they will more quickly believe that using the the tormento. Tacitus also uses solennite when he says " …The most terrible tortures upon a body system of guys. ” (Tacitus 327). This kind of sentence plus the more descriptive details appeal to the reader's emotion of sympathy. Readers should feel terrible that he penalized the Christians merely mainly because they stick to disliked new religion; Nero merely employed them as a scapegoat, because an effort in an attempt to take a few blame away from him.

In addition to pathos, Tacitus also uses this plentiful description to influence visitors to think of Nero ahead software as a corrupt, manipulative man. He produces small testimonies with this kind of vivid photos, such as " …so very much as garden and grass and mock wilderness. ” (Tacitus 324).
