Beriberi is a disease in which the body does not have enough thiamine (vitamin b1).
People with many risk of obtaining the disease will be alcoholics. Drinking much can lead to poor diet and alcoholic beverages makes it harder for the body to maintain thiamine. Beriberi occurs in breast-fed newborns when the mom's body is short of thiamine. The condition was generally found in Asian countries (especially inside the 19th century) because individuals countries think that polished white colored rice was obviously a staple food but light rice consists of very low thiamine because the vitamin b1 has been eliminated. A rare condition known as genetic beriberi is usually passed down through families. People with genetic beriberi lose the cabability to absorb thiamine from food.
There are various kinds of Beriberi. Dry beriberi causes wasting and partial paralysis. Wet beriberi affects the heart; it can be sometimes fatal. Infantile beriberi is commonly present in children. Evident symptoms will be crying, although not loudly and without tears. With no treatment, it can show fatal within 24 hours.
- Symptoms pertaining to wet beriberi are:

вЂў Loss in feeling (sensation) in hands and foot
вЂў Loss of muscle function or paralysis of the lower legs вЂў Mental confusion/speech troubles
вЂў Strange eye actions (nystagmus)
-- Symptoms for dry beriberi are:
вЂў Awakening at night short of inhale
вЂў Increased heart rate
вЂў Shortness of breath with activity
вЂў Swelling in the lower legs
вЂў Shortness of breathing after activity
In the treatment they will replace the thiamine the body is missing. The treatment will either be in tablet or shot which means putting liquid in the body. If they have no thiamine products, they given there patients with thiamin-rich diet (example; Brown bread) which will naturally lead to recovery but in a much reduced rate.
